While watching the latest season of Marvel’s Loki on Disney+, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between the major conflict in the series and concerns raised by colleagues regarding the potential explosion of content generated by tools like Google’s Bard, ChatGPT, and others. So, I decided to put fingers to keyboard and explore this connection, hoping to use it as a teaching opportunity or at least to peer into the crystal ball.

In Marvel’s Loki series, the”Time Loom” is a device responsible for managing and maintaining an infinite number of timelines, each branching off due to alternate actions stemming from every decision ever made. The Time Loom’s task is to prune “bad” timelines and ensure the stability of a single timeline.

In this analogy, Google, as the world’s most prominent search engine, takes on the role of the Time Loom. It faces the Herculean challenge of sorting and ranking an enormous flood of content that’s heading its way. Google’s search algorithms are designed to prioritize relevance, authority, and uniqueness, ensuring that users find the most valuable and trustworthy information. However, with the rise of AI-generated content, Google faces an even greater challenge in distinguishing genuine quality from the deluge.

Google, being a gatekeeper of information, plays a crucial role in addressing these challenges and ensuring that AI-generated content is used responsibly and ethically.

The Perils of Unchecked Content Creation

In the series, the destruction of the Time Loom leads to an infinite loop of alternate timelines, resulting in chaos and disaster. This serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked content creation. Imagine having a brilliant article idea, only to discover that 1,776 others had the same idea and all rushed to AI to generate it, eager to publish it as soon as possible. The “Loom” (Google, in our analogy) is overwhelmed, struggling to determine who should be ranked higher among the myriad similar articles.

  • Embrace the Future, but Don’t Forget the Basics: AI may help you generate content, but if your website doesn’t follow key technical optimization elements like Core Web Vitals compliance, optimized meta content, and schema markup, your article won’t rank well, regardless of its quality.
  • Use AI tools to supplement your skills, not replace them: AI tools can boost productivity and efficiency, but they should complement your creativity and expertise, not replace them.
  • Choose the Right AI Tool for the Job: Various AI tools are available, each with its strengths and weaknesses. Select the right tool for your specific task.
  • Experiment with Different AI Tools: There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to using AI tools. Experiment with different tools to find the ones that work best for you.

The Time Loom paradox serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of unchecked content creation. In the future, we can expect a massive influx of content to be published. It will be up to Google to rank and sort through it, hopefully removing factually inaccurate and non-credible content. As readers, it will be our responsibility to discern what constitutes quality and what should be discarded.
